Background:
Coos Art Museum continues its tradition of hosting an annual Maritime Art Exhibition on the scenic southern Oregon Coast. Coinciding with the opening of this annual maritime art exhibit is the Plein-Air/Paint out event for maritime painters. A day of painting outdoors on the Coos Bay; the city docks, shipyards, boat basins, sandy beaches, rocky coves, rugged shorelines, dramatic cliffs, lush rain forests and cultured gardens that are all within 10 miles of the Coos Art Museum. The 24th Annual Maritime Art Exhibition is officially recognized and co-sponsored by the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA).

Featured Artist: Pacific Northwest marine artist Steve Mayo has had a lifetime interest in maritime art and history.
Mayo learned technique and composition with the noted watercolor artist Charles Mulvey in Seaview, Washington. He majored in Fine Art including one year at the San Francisco Art Institute. In 1975, Mayo left the tugboat industry to pursue his art full-time. He began showing his art at the Kirsten Gallery in Seattle, Washington. The consistent quality and historical accuracy of his paintings established him as a premier marine artist including a first place award at the 1980 Mystic Seaport International Marine Art Exhibition. Today Mayo and his wife live in Bellingham, WA. His paintings reside in many private and corporate collections internationally and have been featured as covers and illustrations in a number of books on Northwest regional and British Columbia history.
