Juror: Brian Hoover

Brian Hoover is a Professor of painting and printmaking at Southern Utah University. He received his art training at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Kutztown University where he received his BFA and the State University of New York where he received his MFA. Hoover’s highly detailed and symbolic work is exhibited nationally and is part of many private and public collections throughout the United States. In works inspired by the German symbolist painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries his imagery revolves around dreams, myth and spirituality. Often he begins works by spilling paint unto a canvas and then drawing out the subconscious images which arise. Hoover has had one-person exhibitions at the Springville Museum of Art in Springville, Utah and at Penn State University in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was the winner of the 2009 Expressions West exhibition at Coos Art Museum with his painting Girl with Fantastic Hat IX Saturnalia.

Coos Art Museum (CAM):

Coos Art Museum is the cornerstone of visual arts on Oregon’s Southern Coast. Through collections, exhibitions and educational programs, we are building an arts and cultural community and promoting the appreciation, understanding and expression of visual art. It is the third oldest art museum in Oregon. CAM traces its roots to the Coos Artist League, active since 1950. Members of the League conducted early operations in storefront locations before moving to a Carnegie Public Library Building. In 1982 Coos Art Museum membership acquired and remodeled the retired US Post Office building, a historical art deco structure built in 1937. Currently, CAM has six active galleries totaling 5,600 square feet of display space and a 570 piece and growing Permanent Collection of mid-20th Century and contemporary American art.
