Terry Magill: Reflections of Kyushu
In memory of Kent Holloway
a fine artist and
a gentleman

My deepest appreciation goes to my loving family, dear friends and students for their unwavering support throughout the years. Your faith has supplied me with the courage and motivation to undertake this discipline of painting and to trust myself to follow where it leads.

Painting has been a constant entity in my life - from my earliest attempts to copy old masters right on up to my latest works in this exhibition. Though studying art continually presents to me new insights and helps to hone my perceptions, I am always called back to the same subject matter to explore and revel in the color, beauty and light; whether I am on our West Coast or on the lovely island of Kyushu. The fishing boats, sun-washed cliffs, farmhouses, fields and forests, or even the quiet little objects of everyday living compel me to trace their forms with hand and heart.

My recent travels throughout Japan have added another intriguing, rich layer of interest in painting for me. As a painter, I am drawn to the ancient mystery of the Japanese culture, steeped in their art traditions and their profound reverence for natural beauty. Being in Kyushu felt, at once, both familiar and excitingly new.

I am honored to present these new works, influenced by my time spent in the rural coastal areas of Kyushu, for your enjoyment.
