July 21 - September 23, 2006

A 3-dimensional fabric art exhibition of an underwater sea garden by Medford installation artist Audrey Sochor. On display upstairs in the Uno Richter Atrium.

Artist Audrey Sochor, inspired by watching moon jellyfish at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, went back to her studio and began to paint them on curtains of double layers of polyester 8xx screen printing fabric. When hung with lighting behind the images, she found that as the viewer moved and as the lighting changed behind the double curtains, the images began to vibrate in the moiré phenomenon as had been discovered by Venezuelan artist Jesus Raphael Soto. Sochor's images began to appear like jelly fish actually swimming in the sea.

A phenomenon enjoyed by scuba divers is that, in the Zen sense, time seems to stand still. That was the feeling that led Sochor to go on to develop environments of Sea Curtains - to give the gallery visitor the feeling of what it is like to dive through kelp beds and schools of fish for extended periods in the sea.
