In the spirit of his Yup'ik culture, Charette follows in the footsteps
of his namesake, Aarnaquq, to continue the tradition of spirit mask making.
Charette's fine art sculptures of mix media are contemporary in nature.
They reflect the traditional Yup'ik ideas and themes by combining both
modern and traditional materials. Charette and his sculptures recently
won awards at the 2004 SWAIA Indian Art Market held annually in Santa
Fe, NM.

Ryan's works were created over a 30-year span during his tenure as a
Professor of Architecture and Allied Arts at the University of Oregon
from 1946-1974. These works range from geometric abstractions, to figurative,
to Cézanne-inspired landscapes. As a colleague of R. Buckminster
Fuller, over five hundred of Ryan's 3-dimensional works are housed in
the Fuller Archives at Stanford University.

Featured artist William Shelton thought long, hard and even lost some
sleep while deciding which entry to award 'Best of Show' at the Coos
Art Museum's 11th Annual Maritime Art Exhibition. "By the day before
the opening, I had it narrowed down to 4 entries. Then I couldn't sleep
that night. So I went out at daybreak the next morning and completed
a plein air painting. That helped to clear my mind and I came back, only
to choose another set of finalists. Boy, this is such a great show that
it was very difficult to choose just one!"
22 'Entries of Merit' have also been selected
from the exhibition. The 11th Annual Maritime Art Exhibition
will run through September 25th, 2004.

Maritime historian and model shipwright, Steve Priske has curated an
exhibit based on images from Coos Art Museum's Victor
C. West Collection. The stories and images depict both the people
and the 'Tall
Ships' they built - a little known fact that some of these massive
sailing vessels of yesteryear were actually built in the shipyards around
the Coos Bay. Dick & Judy Wagner and Ivene Pitam have lent their
ship models of the Western Shore and the STS A.M. Simpson for the exhibition.
Both of these ships were constructed in the shipyards of the Coos Bay
with the details on their life span depicted in the stories.

Wisconsin based photographer Larry Stark’s
images from his 13 year odyssey to ‘catch’ an indigenous
species of fish from each of the 50 states and an accompanying
tale from each of those trips. Not only was Larry on hand to
tell us more 'fishing tales', he checked out our local rivers,
lakes and the Pacific Ocean with both his camera and his fishing
gear!

Antique fly rods, reels, fishing poles and lures along with tied fishing
