MONOTYPE with Chine-Collé PRINTMAKING with Pat Snyder & Mike Holm

Dates: Saturday - February 27, 2010
Time: 10:00am - 3:00pm
FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND ADULT STUDENTS

Monotype produces a print with the spontaneous quality of a painting or drawing within the fine art of printmaking with an etching press. Participants can use a variety of media painted or drawn onto a Plexiglas receiving plate which offers a consistent thickness for a uniform etching pressure. Students will also learn the process of Chine-collé which is an additional layer of printed paper glued to the heavier base print. This allows the artist to print on a much more delicate surface, such as Japanese paper or linen, which pulls finer details off the plate. Another purpose is to provide a background color behind the image that is different from the surrounding backing sheet. Participants will learn the many different tools, materials and terminology employed in the monotype process as well as the use of the etching press.

A TWO-DAY PRIMER ON DESIGN with John Hewitt

Dates: Saturday & Sunday - May 22 and 23, 2010
Time: 9:00am to 4:00pm
FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND ADULT STUDENTS

Paint buildings and other man-made structures focusing on the abstract design elements. Learn how to arrange a painting with appeal simply from strength of the shapes as they interlock and relate to each other within the context of a representational work. Boldness of concept can be planned. Learn to achieve that initial impact on the viewer that grabs their imagination by skillful use of the elements and principles of design. Learn to put your mark on the painting rather than merely illustrating the scene before you. The value of preliminary sketches will become so obvious, it is hoped that you will continue to use them long after the workshop.
John Hewitt is a Signature Member of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America and has exhibited in over 100 national juried shows in the past 20 years and has won over 30 awards in these shows. He regularly teaches watercolor workshops on the West Coast and Europe.
