Cutting Edge Prospectus - 2009

December 11, 2009 – February 13, 2010
Opening Night Reception & Awards Ceremony
Friday, December 11, 2009, 5-7 p.m.
Coos Art Museum, 235 Anderson Ave, Coos Bay, OR 97420
A JURIED EXHIBITION
Scope
Collage, an artistic concept associated with the beginning of Modern Art, entails much more than the idea of gluing something onto something else. The names that stand out among the pioneers are: Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Marcel Duchamp, Kurt Schwitters, Hannah Hoch, Joseph Cornell, Louise Nevelson, Romare Bearden, Ray Johnson, Edward Kienholz and Robert Rauschenberg.
Collage and Assemblage combine two- and three-dimensional images and materials to create original art. Utilizing various adherence methods, the process combines often unrelated items and other media to investigate public and private issues, some seriously, some "tongue-in-cheek."
Eligibility
Open to all artists - painters, sculptors, and printmakers - over 18 years of age residing in the states of Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington. Artists are invited to submit up to three collages or assemblages on any theme. Works selected by jurors from submitted entries will be chosen on the basis of creative excellence and quality of execution. All works must be original and completed within the last two years. "Digital Collage" is not eligible for this exhibition, although collages and assemblages that incorporate digitally created elements are eligible. Coos Art Museum's "On the Cutting Edge: West Coast Artists Using Collage/Assemblage" committee will be the final authority on eligibility. Accepted works meant for wall hanging must be ready with all necessary hardware in place.

The Selection Committee will have three Jurors:
Juror: Kay Campbell
Kay Campbell received her MFA in Fibers and Textile Design at the University of Kansas and is currently a Professor of Art at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon where she serves as area head of the Foundations program. In her previous appointment at Southern Oregon University, she ran the Fibers program, which she developed, offering a broad curriculum including cross-discipline applications of the Fibers media and Surface Design - print, paint and dye processes, applied to a fabric surface.
Campbell has served as a board member to the National Surface Design Association, and has been a curator for two significant exhibitions, as well as several regional exhibitions. She has received numerous grants and awards and has art work included in many public collections. Her work in mixed media has appeared in over 250 International, National and Regional exhibitions.
Juror: Jon Leach
Jon Leach was born in Seattle, Washington and has lived in Portland, San Francisco, and New York. He received a BFA in Painting from the University of Washington. He currently maintains a studio in Winston, Oregon. Leach's work has been exhibited regionally in PNW Art Annual, Art About Agriculture, Art Around Oregon, Expressions West, as well as nationally, most recently in "Abstraction Now" in New York.
Leach's art "addresses issues of non-relational references, temporal vulnerabilities, and remote, dissimilar elements creating a visual dialogue within a primary basis of art-historical fusion. This process lends itself to an understanding of art work by way of a Yeatsian premise: that which exists through itself is called meaning."
Juror: Beverly Soasey
Beverly Soasey is currently the director of the Jacobs Gallery at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts, in Eugene, Oregon. Previously a senior designer and illustrator at Funk & Associates, she now has her own graphic design business. Soasey says that her early childhood memories of living in Japan and her love of travel heavily influence her art which falls into the category of mixed media/assemblage. Her distinctive work has been displayed at Opus6ix in Eugene.
Coos Art Museum
