Expressions West 2010 - April 23 – July 3, 2010

(Unlike past competitions, Expressions West 2010 will offer cash awards - not - purchase prizes)
Eligibility
Painters residing in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming are invited to submit up to three entries depicting paintings in one or more of four media: oil, acrylic, pastel, or watercolor. Any and all themes of expression define the parameters of acceptable entries. Previous winners of cash purchase awards from Expressions West 2007 through Expressions West 2009 are eligible to enter, but will not be eligible to win a cash award.
General Rules – PLEASE NOTE, DIGITAL OR SLIDE SUBMISSION FORMATS ACCEPTED
Artists may submit a total of up to three (3) entries, with a non-refundable fee of $20 for the first entry and $10 each for the second and third submissions. These entries must have been created within the last 2 years (2008-2010) with a framed size limitation of four (4) feet by eight (8) feet and a weight limitation of 40 lbs.

• Paintings that are accepted must be the same as the images on the files or slides entered, (no substitutions).
• Digital files must be in jpg format minimum of 300 dpi at approximately 8” x 10” all on one CD-ROM. All CD’s must be labeled, on the outside, with the artist's name, title of the work, medium, date completed, and size of the painting(s). Name the electronic files as follows;

Abbreviate as needed on the electronic file name, but be sure the entry form has complete information.
• NO SLIDE SHOWS, FLASH FILES, THUMBNAILS etc.
• NO SUBMISSIONS VIA EMAIL WILL BE ALLOWED
• Slides must be 2" by 2" mounted, each marked with the artist's name, title of the work, medium, date completed, and size of the painting. Please denote the top of the work on the slide and submit in a plastic jacket. No glass-mounted slides will be accepted.
• If you are submitting a work that is part of a series, the submitted piece MUST be unique and distinguishable from any of your other works of art. Works that have previously been exhibited at Coos Art Museum are NOT eligible.
Deadline for submissions is a postmark of Feb 6, 2010. Send submissions, completed forms and entry fee to Coos Art Museum, 235 Anderson Ave. Coos Bay, OR 97420. Include with your entry information a resume as well as a self-addressed, 6x9 stamped envelope (SASE) for submissions return and acceptance letters with shipping info. The Museum will make resumes of artists whose works are accepted available to visitors during the exhibit. Notice of acceptance will be sent by February 26, 2010.
Winning an Award
The winning First Place painting will receive cash prize of $1000.
The winning Second Place painting will receive cash prize of $750.
The winning Third Place Award will receive cash prize of $250.
4 honorable mention ribbons will also be awarded.
Sales
Works in the exhibition may be available for sale. Artist agrees to donate 30% of any sale to Coos Art Museum. Artist is to be paid three weeks from end of show. Please price your works with this in mind. Your entry confirms all terms of this agreement.
Delivery and Pickup of Art Works
Artists whose work is accepted must have paintings delivered to the museum via carrier service at their own expense for arrival between April 12 and April 16, 2010. Hand delivered work will be received at the museum on Friday, April 16, 2010 between 10 am and 4 pm and Saturday, April 17, 2010 between 1 pm and 4 pm. Coos Art Museum will not pay for return shipment of artwork. Artists must make pre-paid arrangements to have their work returned to them, or may pick up their work in person at the museum on Saturday July 3, 4-6pm and Monday July 5, 2010 between 10am and 2pm
General Specifications
Works must be ready for hanging and be no more than four (4) feet by eight (8) feet, including the frame. All work must be labeled on the back with the artist’s name, address, and phone number. Labels must also show the work’s Title, Medium, Date of Creation, and (retail) value of the piece as set by the artist. Art is insured while in the museum from April 12 through July 09, 2010.
Juror: Kevin Kadar
A cosmopolitan and highly respected artist, Kevin Kadar divides his time between Western Europe and Oregon. He is known for intimate landscape and figure painting with a romantic vision of idyllic settings and an Old Master academic treatment of form. Kadar’s works in oil, acrylic and ink wash are informed by expressionistic brushwork, a tightly controlled palette and a keen understanding of the human figure. He explores a wide variety of themes in his work, from mysticism to spirituality and sensuality.
Kadar exhibits regularly at the Froelick Gallery in Portland, Oregon where he has had numerous solo exhibitions. Other recent solo exhibitions of his work took place at, Paolo Tonin Arte Contemporanea in Turin, Italy, Cocagne in Paris, France and the Hallie Ford Museum in Salem, Oregon. He has works in the permanent collections of Tacoma Art Museum, Tacoma, WA, Hallie Ford Museum of Art-Willamette University, Salem, OR and Coos Art Museum, Coos Bay, OR.
Free Tour & Critique
On Saturday, April 24, Exhibition Juror Kevin Kadar will conduct a review and critique of Expressions West 2010 throughout the Maggie Karl Gallery at Coos Art Museum. The tour starting at 1pm is free and open to the public.
Coos Art Museum:
“Coos Art Museum is the cornerstone of visual arts on Oregon’s Southern Coast. Through collections, exhibitions and educational programs, we are building an arts and cultural community and promoting the appreciation, understanding and expression of visual art.” Located on the scenic southern Oregon Coast Coos Art Museum is the 3rd oldest art museum in Oregon. CAM traces its roots to the Coos Artist League, active since 1950. Members of the League conducted early operations in storefront locations before moving to a Carnegie Library Building. In 1982 Coos Art Museum members, acquired and remodeled the old US Post Office building, a historical art deco structure built in 1937. The Museum has five active galleries totaling 16,000 sq feet of display space and a 540 piece Permanent Collection of mid-20th Century and contemporary American art. |
