cam biennial 2006 curator's statement

"The purpose of this organization is to serve the community by sustaining an art museum. Through the Coos Art Museum collections, exhibitions, and educational programs, the organization will promote appreciation and understanding for the arts, and expression in the arts." -Mission Statement, Coos Art Museum

Welcome to Coos Art Museum’s Biennial Exhibition of Works by Oregon Artists. An exhibition of recent artwork is sponsored by the Museum every other year and the outcome is incredible. Virtually every medium, form, and subject is addressed in this exhibition. The Biennial is non-juried, making the result a true surprise to the Museum’s staff and visitors.

The Biennial is an example of the Museum’s dedication to its mission. Not only does this exhibit create a place for emerging works to be viewed, but it also gives the artist an opportunity to begin or further their professional career.

The artwork is displayed throughout all of the Museum’s galleries, some with specific curatorial direction. Within each gallery the displays are designed to present the various types of art forms and methods, to help each viewer understand diverse subjects and styles in order to learn about and enjoy the art.

Through the run of the Biennial, votes will be collected for a People’s Choice Award to be announced on December 1, 2006. The winning artist will be given a solo exhibition at Coos Art Museum. Be sure to vote for your favorite work of art!

Ciara Van Velsor, Associate Curator
