CAM Biennial's 'People's Choice' Award

CAM Biennial's 'People's Choice' awardTerry Magill ' People's Choice' Award winner
Voting for the 'People’s Choice' selection was held during the run of the recent CAM Biennial 2004 exhibition Feb 6 - March 13, 2004. Visitors of the exhibition were encouraged to choose their favorite work of art by filling out a ballot. The winning work of art was a watercolor titled Japanese Roof Tiles, by Terry Magill of Myrtle Point, OR. 'I am so pleased that my work was so well liked by the museum visitors. It really tells me that my work has made a connection with people and I am thrilled to be selected for the People's Choice Award'.

Overseas travel inspires a local view
Magill's inspiration for Japanese Roof Tiles came from a recent visit to Japan. In 2000, Magill went to visit her son who was living in Oita, Japan, a city whose architecture was mostly post-WWII. Magill's son was fortunate to live next door to an old barn that was from the 19th century. Magill's room looked out on to the roof of the barn. 'Here in this city of relatively new and bland architecture, was this gem from the past. I loved the ornate woodwork and tiles. I am glad to have painted this image, because they have since torn down the barn, as it was no longer being used'.

Oita's loss is CAM's gain
MJ Koreiva, Executive Director of CAM was very pleased with size of the 2004 Biennial and with the voter turnout. 'We had a tremendous turn out this year - both in submissions with a total of 262 works of art and in the balloting. 132 of the works of art received at least one vote - that means 50% of the artwork displayed was someone's favorite!' Small, little notations were penciled in on the ballots for Japanese Roof Tiles. 'I can hear this painting', 'it's so peaceful', 'it makes me smile' were just some of the little messages on the ballots for Japanese Roof Tiles.

Magill to exhibit in 2005
With a big smile on her face, Magill exclaims, 'now I am really inspired to create new works for my solo-exhibition at CAM in 2005'. Both a local artist and art instructor, Magill has been teaching art for the past 20 years in both Northern California and in Coos County. Magill maintains regularly scheduled classes through Southwestern, CAM, South Slough Reserve, local public schools and private workshops. Magill's work can be seen at the South Slough Interpretive Center and at the Clock Tower Gallery in Bandon.
